Community steps up to the 10,000 steps a day in May challenge for St David’s Hospice Care challenge with Kymin

SCRUFFY the dog helped to lead the way when Newport financial services firm boss Robin Hall launched the 10,000 steps a day in May challenge in support of St David’s Hospice Care

Delyth Edwards, aged nine; Lowri Edwards, seven; Harry Adams, seven-and-a-half and Alys Edwards, two; joined  Claire Miles, Jeanette McNamee and Tania Ansell, of St David’s Hospice Care, putting their best foot forward.

Against a stunning backdrop of the Usk Valley at Newport’s Ridgeway the walkers helped get this year’s walking fundraiser underway.

Robin Hall, managing director of financial planners, Kymin, and a team from the Newport-based business are taking part in the challenge. Kymin, who  have supported a huge number of events over the years in aid of the hospice, are sponsors of the 10k steps a day in May event.

Robin said: “It’s never been more important than now to support the hospice which has been experiencing its most challenging time in its forty-plus year history.

“And what better way to support the hospice than getting out for regular walks in May with friends, family and loved ones exploring the wonderful countryside at this magical time of the year.

“The challenge encourages people across all walks of life and age ranges to get out and about after getting back to work or normality after lock-down. Physical, as well as mental, fitness is more important than ever after the privations and restrictions of the pandemic lockdown.”

Robin and other team members aim to complete the 10,000 steps a day challenge by walking from home to the office and completing a River Usk circuit during the day.

Entries are already flooding in not just from local people but from further afield.

Tania Ansell, of St David’s Hospice Care, who is organising the event, said 10k steps in May appears to have really grabbed people’s imagination. She said they are hoping to surpass last year’s total raised of £18,000. Last year walkers signed up from as far afield as Yorkshire and even Minnesota in, the USA

“We are very grateful to Kymin for their continued support and again stepping up to back our 10k steps in May challenge. Kymin have been marvellous supporters over the years and are a shining example of how a local business can engage with us for the greater good.

“We would ask that everyone gets involved with this new campaign.  10,000 steps is a challenge to complete each day but the health rewards speak for themselves. Raising funds will support those patients and families most in need living locally within our communities.”

10,000 steps a day in May walkers on signing up will receive a free T-shirt and event progress chart. Raise £100 or more and you will receive a free snood. The right ingredients and some flair are needed to convert former south Wales bake house

ARE you a fan of TV’s Great British Bake Off? Then how about investing in your very own bake house?

You won’t need to have loads of bread but will perhaps have to have more than a large pinch of imagination to turn the shell of the historic building into a creation of which to be proud.

A former bake house, in the heart of a popular residential area near Bridgend, in Mid Glamorgan, is being sold at auction this month(April) by Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions.

The substantial, stone-built, bake house, at Garn Road, Maesteg, is listed with a guide price of Just £16,000-plus.

Debra Bisley, who is selling the property for Paul Fosh Auctions said: “The dilapidated property is located in the primarily residential and desirable area of Maesteg.

“The detached property was formerly used as a bake house but is now rather like a crust, or outer shell of a building with no filling but it does appear to have a firm base. It currently loosely comprises of a garage to the ground floor with an open space to the first floor.

“The property could allow for further development, subject to the relevant planning consent and the new owner having a recipe, the wherewithal and all the right ingredients for success.”

The former bake house along with 80 other properties will be offered for sale online in the Paul Fosh Auctions sale which starts at noon, on Tuesday, April 12 and ends from 5pm, on Thursday, April 14.

Bluebelles keeping founders memory alive top £75,000 aid raised for Gwent hospice

A Gwent group which continued its tireless fundraising in memory of its founder throughout the pandemic has topped £75,000 and shows no sign of stopping until it reaches its goal.

The Bluebelles team raises money for Newport-based St David’s Hospice Care  in memory of the late Jackie Lewis who herself worked tirelessly to raise funds in memory of her son Steve.

The Gwent-based Bluebelles fundraisers, named by its founder after the spring flowers they saw on their first sponsored walk at Cwmbran Boating lake,  were honoured for their outstanding work with a celebration event at the hospice in  Blackett Avenue, Malpas.

Jackie Lewis’ son, Matt, recognising the achievements, said: “My Mum would be so proud that this target was hit. My Mum and her friends started this group when my brother passed away . The marvellous St David’s Hospice Care allowed Steve to pass away pain free and with his dignity intact.

“The hospice turned a negative into a positive. Through quizzes, auctions, entertainment, they have been able to raise £75,000.  After my Mother, Jackie,  passed away her friends Sue, Gill and Mo, continued to fundraise through raffles and then limited quizzes etc due to Covid. They have done an incredible job in raising thousands more since my mum unfortunately passed.

“St David’s Hospice Care is such an amazing charity in our community. I’ve seen firsthand how they treat their patients. It’s how health care should strive to be. I will be forever in their debt at how St David’s Hospice Care treated my brother and Mum.”

Sue Murphy, a member of the Bluebelles group which also includes Gill Shaw, Mo Pidgeon and Matt Lewis, said: “Our dear friend, Jackie Lewis set up the group after she lost her son Steve, to cancer, aged 31.

“Unfortunately, Jackie herself, also passed away with cancer.  St David’s Hospice Care cared for them both.  We, as friends, agreed to carry on fundraising in both their names, Jackie’s son Matt also joined our team.

“We are very proud to keep on fundraising in memory of Jackie and Steve. We really can’t thank all our supporters enough. It has been really difficult during the pandemic and we have had to cancel a few events.  We managed to do Christmas and Easter Raffles with people paying online. Also, last year, we had coffee mornings outside in a garden, for a few people.

“We have set ourselves a target of raising £80,000, with no timescale.  We are running an Easter Raffle at the moment and hopefully we will be having a quiz night in June. We have held quiz nights, music nights, walks, raffles and coffee mornings to raise the funds.

“We’re thrilled that we have reached the milestone of £75,000 for St David’s Hospice Care and just know Jackie would be very proud of what we have achieved in her and Steve’s name.”

Trustee Jim Thompson, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “I and everyone at the hospice continues to be astounded at the tremendous work Bluebelles have put in to raise £75,000 for the hospice. I know Jackie and her dear son Steve would have been thrilled to bits and very proud of their momentous achievement.

“It’s amazing what the Bluebelles have done. Thank you for all your very hard work.”
